About the Book :
The Partition of India cast its lengthy shadows on two generations of the subcontinent. Ordinary people across borders were sucked into its vortex as unconscious and innocent actors, as maddened mobs. Drawing on short stories, poems, satirical writings, eye-witness accounts, and interviews, these two volumes document the anguish and sense of betrayal at the freedom gained. These writings are a reminder of how partition cruelly displaced millions, divided India’s past, wrecked its civilizational rhythm and unity and left behind a seemingly constant legacy of hostility, bitterness, and rancour between the people and government of India and Pakistan.
About the Author :
Currently the director-general of National Archives of India, Professor Mushirul Hasan is one of India’s most erudite and prolific historians. He is the author of Legacy of a Divided Nation: India’s Muslims Since Independence (1997); John Company to the Republic: A Story of Modern India (2001); Islam in the Subcontinent: Muslims in a Plural Society (2002); From Pluralism to Separatism: Qasbas in Colonial India (2003); A Moral Reckoning: Muslim Intellectuals in Nineteenth-Century Delhi (2004), The Nehrus: Personal Histories (2006).
